The Pristimantis bacchus is a type of frog. It belongs to the Strabomantidae family. This frog lives only in a specific area of Colombia. You can find it on the western slopes of the Eastern Mountain Range in the Santander Department. It's often called the wine robber frog. This name comes from its amazing blood-red eyes. It's named after Bacchus, the Roman God of Wine.

What Does the Wine Robber Frog Look Like?

These frogs are quite small. Adult males are about 22 to 29 millimeters (0.9 to 1.1 inches) long. Adult females are a bit bigger. They measure about 32 to 35 millimeters (1.3 to 1.4 inches) long. This measurement is from their snout to their rear end.

Body Features

The frog's head is as wide as its body. Its snout looks pointed from above but is rounded from the side. The skin on its back is smooth. Its back is a rust-brown color. It has small, dull yellow spots. You might also see faint stripes along its sides.

Eye and Face Details

A black stripe runs from its eye area to above its ear. This stripe has a dark brown border underneath it. The frog's lips have light-colored spots. Its most striking feature is its eyes. The iris (the colored part of the eye) is blood red. It has black spots or lines and a black streak across it.

Belly and Vocal Sac

The frog's belly is whitish. It has dark brown spots. Male frogs have a special pouch under their throat. This is called a vocal sac. They use it to make calls.

Hands and Feet

The fingers have small ridges along their sides. They also have pads at the tips. The pads on the outer fingers are larger. The toes have slight fringes and pads too. These toe pads are smaller than the finger pads. These frogs do not have webbing between their toes.

Where Does the Wine Robber Frog Live?

Pristimantis bacchus lives in tropical cloud forests. These forests are high up in the mountains. They are found at elevations between 1,450 and 2,300 meters (about 4,750 to 7,550 feet) above sea level. You can also find them at the edges of forests. They sometimes live in shrubs found in pastures. These frogs usually stay on the plants close to the ground.

Life Cycle

This frog has a special way of developing. Unlike many frogs, it does not have a free-swimming tadpole stage. Instead, the eggs hatch directly into tiny froglets. This is called direct development.

Conservation Status

The wine robber frog can be quite common in some areas. Its population seems to be stable for now. However, its home is shrinking. The biggest threat to these frogs is habitat loss. This happens because of farming and cattle ranching. These activities destroy the forests where the frogs live.

Protected Areas

Luckily, Pristimantis bacchus lives in a protected area. It is found in the Santuario de Fauna y Flora Guanentá Alto Río Fonce. This sanctuary helps protect the frogs and their habitat.
