Pristimantis gentryi is a special kind of frog. It belongs to a family of frogs called Strabomantidae. This frog lives only in a small part of central Ecuador. You can find it west of a place called Páramo de Apagua, in the Cotopaxi Province. The name gentryi was given to honor Alwyn Gentry. He was an American botanist who sadly passed away while working in Ecuador. Some people call this frog the Pilalo robber frog.

What the Pilalo Robber Frog Looks Like

Size and Shape

Adult male frogs are about 23–29 mm (0.9–1.1 in) long. This measurement is from their nose to their bottom. Female frogs are a bit bigger. They measure about 30–36 mm (1.2–1.4 in) from nose to bottom. These frogs have a short snout, which is their nose area.

Skin and Color

The skin on their back is usually brown. It does not have many patterns. But they do have a light stripe near their mouth. Their back skin can be smooth or a little bumpy. They often have clear folds of skin along their sides. The belly of the frog is a creamy color. It has small brown spots. The back of their legs is also brown.

Special Features

These frogs do not have an eardrum that you can see. Their fingers and toes have narrow edges, but they are not webbed. This means there is no skin between their digits like some other frogs have. Their finger and toe pads are small, but you can easily see them.

Where the Pilalo Robber Frog Lives and How We Can Help It

Frog Homes

The Pristimantis gentryi frog lives in high places. These areas are between 2,850–3,380 m (9,350–11,090 ft) above sea level. They like cloud forests, which are forests often covered in mist. They might also live in high-up bush lands and grasslands.

Staying Safe

This frog is in danger. Its home is being lost. People are cutting down forests to make space for farms. They also build new homes and towns. This takes away the places where these frogs can live and find food. We need to protect these areas so the Pilalo robber frog can survive.
