What Does It Look Like?

This frog has some special features. It has dark, net-like patterns with light spots on its upper legs (thighs) and groin area. You can also see clear stripes on its lips. It has a distinct eardrum, called a tympanum, on the outside of its head.

The Pristimantis permixtus also has small bumps, called tubercles, on its eyelids and heels. These bumps are not sharply cone-shaped. Interestingly, male frogs of this species do not have vocal slits, which are usually used for making calls. The patterns on their backs can vary a lot from one frog to another.

This is a medium-sized frog. Its size can be different depending on where it lives. Frogs from southern areas tend to be smaller. Male frogs are usually about 22 to 31 millimeters long from their snout to their vent (the opening at the end of their body). Females are larger, measuring about 32 to 45 millimeters. In some southern populations, males average 24 millimeters, and females average only 27 millimeters.

The Pristimantis permixtus looks very similar to another frog called Pristimantis supernatis. Because they look so alike, people have sometimes confused the two species.

Where Does It Live and How Is It Doing?

The Pristimantis permixtus frog naturally lives in cloud forests and in shrublands found in sub-páramo areas. Cloud forests are misty, cool forests, and páramo is a type of high-altitude grassland. These frogs can also live in forests that are growing back after being cut down, and in other areas that have been changed by humans.

This frog is active at night, which means it is a nocturnal species. It likes to stay on low plants, usually up to 2 meters (about 6.5 feet) above the ground.

The Pristimantis permixtus is a common frog. It is found in many places and can adapt well to different environments. Because of this, there are no big threats to its survival right now.
