Sir Probyn Ellsworth Inniss (born November 18, 1936 – died March 12, 2017) was an important leader in the Caribbean. He served as the Governor of Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla from 1975 to 1980. After Anguilla became separate, he was the Governor of Saint Christopher and Nevis from 1980 to 1981.
Early Life and Education
Sir Probyn Inniss was born on Saint Kitts, an island in the Caribbean. He went to secondary school there. Later, he studied at the University College of West Indies and finished his studies in 1961.
After working as a schoolteacher for a while, he traveled to England to study law. He became a lawyer, joining the Middle Temple. When he returned to Saint Kitts, he started working for the government in the civil service. In June 1967, he was given the title of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his hard work.
Becoming Governor
In August 1975, Sir Probyn Inniss took over from Sir Milton Allen as the Governor of Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla. At that time, this area was an Associated State of the United Kingdom. This meant it had some self-rule but was still connected to the UK.
Because of his important new role, he was made a Knight Bachelor in 1976. This is a special honor from the Queen. He was personally given this title by Queen Elizabeth II herself in July of that year.
Changes in Government
During his time as Governor, the government changed three times. Different leaders served as premier, including Robert Bradshaw, Paul Southwell, Sir Lee Moore, and Sir Kennedy Simmonds.
In 1981, a new law was passed by the government led by Sir Kennedy Simmonds. However, Sir Probyn Inniss believed this law was against the rules of the country's constitution. So, he refused to give it his approval. Because of this, Sir Kennedy Simmonds asked Queen Elizabeth II to remove Sir Probyn from his position as Governor. This happened in November 1981.
Life After Governorship
After leaving his role as Governor, Sir Probyn Inniss went back to being a lawyer. He opened his own law firm. He also loved history and wrote books about Saint Kitts. His books focused on the history of Basseterre and the Saint Kitts and Nevis Labour Party.
