Proctor is a small place in Lake County, Montana, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a settlement that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town.
Proctor is located about 2.2 miles (3.5 kilometers) northwest of a town called Dayton. The people living in Proctor use the ZIP code 59929 for their mail. This community is also close to Skags Lake, which is a natural body of water.
History of Proctor
Early Settlement and Naming
The area where Proctor is located has a long history. Around 1869, the Kootenai people, a Native American tribe, began to settle in this region. During this time, a federal commissary opened in the area. A commissary was like a store that provided supplies, often for military or government workers.
The community got its name from Clarence E. Proctor. He was an important person who started a ranch and opened a store in the area in 1883.
From Dayton to Proctor
Interestingly, the town was not always called Proctor. Until 1910, this settlement was known as Dayton. However, many residents decided to move to a new location. They chose a spot right on the shore of Flathead Lake, which offered better access to the water.
This new location became the current town of Dayton. The original settlement, which was left behind, then took on its current name: Proctor.
