Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Providence Children's Museum is a fun place for kids and families in Providence, Rhode Island. It's a special kind of museum called a non-profit, which means it focuses on its mission rather than making money. You can find it at 100 South Street, in an area known as the Jewelry District.

The Museum's History

The museum first opened its doors in 1977. It was originally known as the "Rhode Island Children's Museum." This made it the very first children's museum in the state of Rhode Island.

Early Beginnings

In 1976, the idea for the museum began. The Pawtucket Congregational Church helped by leasing its Pitcher-Goff House building. This old house was then transformed into a wonderful space for kids. It was filled with exciting exhibits, play areas, and activities.

A New Name and Location

After many years, the museum grew and needed a new home. In 1997, it moved to its current location on South Street in Providence. At this time, it also changed its name to the "Providence Children's Museum." This new facility allowed the museum to offer even more learning and play experiences for young visitors.
