The Pruneyard's History
The Pruneyard Shopping Center was built by Fred Sahadi. He bought the land in 1968. The entire project was finished in 1970. It was designed to be a fancy shopping spot.
Over the years, the Pruneyard has had different owners. In 2014, Ellis Partners and Fortress Investment Group LLC bought it. Later, in 2019, Regency Centers became the new owner. There are plans to add more offices and shops in the future.
Renovations and New Features
A big update and expansion started in 2017. The movie theater was one of the first businesses to open there. It was called United Artists Movie Theater in 1969. It became Camera 7 after an update around 2000.
The theater closed in April 2017 for another renovation. It reopened in April 2018 as Pruneyard Cinemas. Now, you can even get drinks delivered to your seat! There's also a restaurant called the Cedar Room inside.
Free Speech at the Pruneyard
In the late 1970s, something important happened at the Pruneyard. Some high school students wanted to share their ideas there. They were collecting signatures for a petition. However, the mall told them they couldn't do that.
This led to a big legal case. It went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. The court made a decision on June 9, 1980. This case, called Pruneyard Shopping Center v. Robins, set two important rules for American law:
- In California, people can peacefully use their right to free speech. This applies to parts of private shopping centers that are open to the public. However, the shopping centers can set fair rules.
- States can give their citizens more rights than the federal government does. These extra rights must not go against any federal rights.
This means that even though the Pruneyard is private property, it has areas open to everyone. Because of this, people have some free speech rights there.
