Prunus fenzliana is a type of wild almond plant. It grows naturally in the Caucasus region. This area includes parts of Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkmenistan. It likes to grow in high places, usually between 1,400 and 3,500 meters above sea level.

For a long time, scientists thought this wild almond was one of the plants that helped create the regular almond we eat today. That almond is called Prunus dulcis. Recent genetic tests have shown this is true! Prunus fenzliana is the closest relative to the cultivated almond. It is even thought to be its only ancestor.

What Does Prunus fenzliana Look Like?

Prunus fenzliana can be a tall bush or a small tree. It can grow up to 4 meters (about 13 feet) high. You can tell it apart from other similar plants by a few special features.

Twigs and Branches

Its young branches, which are one year old, have a unique color. The side that gets a lot of sun turns reddish. The parts that are in the shade stay green.

Fruits and Seeds

The fruits of Prunus fenzliana start out dark green. As they get older, they change color to a light tan. When the fruits are fully grown, they open up. This is just like how a regular almond fruit opens. Inside, you will find the seed. This seed can be up to 1 centimeter (about 0.4 inches) long.
