The Prunus myrtifolia, also known as the West Indies cherry or myrtle laurel cherry, is a type of shrub or small tree. It belongs to the rose family, just like the apples and roses you might know! This plant is found in the New World, which means North and South America.
Where It Grows
This interesting plant is native to many warm places. You can find it growing in southern Mexico, across Central America, and down into South America. It also lives in the sunny West Indies islands and in the southeastern part of the United States, especially in Florida. It likes warm climates!
What It Looks Like
The Prunus myrtifolia is an evergreen tree, which means its leaves stay green all year long. It can grow quite tall, up to 12 meters (about 40 feet)! That's like a four-story building. This tree does not have any thorns, and it grows as a single tree, not in big clumps.
Its flowers are white and grow in long groups, with up to 30 flowers in each group. When the flowers are gone, they turn into fruit. The fruit is a dark purple color, almost black, and it's shaped like a small ball or an egg.
