Prunus wilsonii is a type of cherry tree that grows in southeast China. Its Chinese name is Chinese: 绢毛稠李. This tree likes to grow in mountains, usually between 950 and 2,500 meters high.

It is a deciduous tree, which means it loses its leaves every autumn. The Prunus wilsonii can grow quite tall, reaching heights of 10 to 30 meters. That's like a building with 3 to 10 floors!

The wood from the Prunus wilsonii tree has been used for very special projects. One famous example is a wooden statue called the Shakyamuni (Shaka Nyorai). This statue is a copy of an older, lost Buddha statue.

The Famous Shakyamuni Sculpture

Chinese sculptors, two brothers named Zhāng Yánjiǎo and Zhāng Yánxí, carved this amazing statue. It was brought to Japan from China in the year 986 by a monk named Chōnen.

The Shakyamuni sculpture stands about 160 centimeters (which is about 5 feet 3 inches) tall. Today, this beautiful wooden statue is considered a National Treasure of Japan. This means it is a very important piece of art and history for the country.
