Puebla de Sanabria is a charming small town in the north-western part of the province of Zamora in Spain. It sits between the Tera and Castro rivers.

This town is an important center for the Sanabria region, which is a type of local district in Spain. It plays a key role in the economy and local government of the area.

A Look at Puebla de Sanabria's History

Puebla de Sanabria has a long history, dating back to around 509 AD. Some early records mention it, though they might have referred to the whole region at first. More clear documents from the 10th century call it "urbe Senabrie," meaning "city of Sanabria." This shows it was an important place for organizing the surrounding area even back then.

Puebla de Sanabria During the Peninsular War

The town played a part in the Peninsular War (1807–1814), a big conflict between France and Spain, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.

In March 1809, a Spanish general named La Romana left about 2,000 soldiers in Puebla de Sanabria. These troops were led by General La Carrera. Later, La Carrera moved most of his men to Santiago de Compostela to help form a new army. He left only a small group of 200 soldiers behind in Sanabria.

French troops, led by Marshal Soult, arrived in Puebla de Sanabria in June 1809. They rested there before moving on to other towns like Benavente and Zamora.

In July 1810, another Spanish general, Taboada, was in charge of troops in Sanabria. About 5,000 French soldiers, led by General Serras, attacked the town and drove Taboada's forces out. The French wanted to threaten the border with Portugal.

However, General Serras soon left Puebla de Sanabria, leaving only a small group of about 400-600 French soldiers behind. As soon as he was gone, General Silveira from Portugal and General Taboada joined their forces. On August 4, they attacked the remaining French soldiers in Puebla de Sanabria. The French troops surrendered a few days later.

General Serras quickly returned to the town, but the Spanish and Portuguese forces had already left with their prisoners. Taboada then reoccupied Puebla de Sanabria and stayed there without further attacks.
