The Puente Nuevo (which means "New Bridge" in Spanish) is the biggest and newest of three bridges in Ronda, a city in southern Spain. It crosses a very deep gorge called El Tajo. This gorge is about 120 meters (390 feet) deep. The Guadalevín River flows at the bottom of this impressive gorge.

Building the Puente Nuevo
The construction of the Puente Nuevo began in 1759. It took a long time to build this amazing bridge. The work was finally finished in 1793, after 34 years. The main architect for this project was José Martin de Aldehuela. Juan Antonio Díaz Machuca was the chief builder.
What is inside the bridge?
There is a special room located right above the bridge's main arch. This room has been used for different things over the years. Today, it holds an exhibition. This exhibition tells the story of the bridge. It shows how it was built and its long history. You can enter this room through a square building. This building used to be a guard-house.
The first bridge attempt
Before the Puente Nuevo, there was another attempt to build a bridge here. Construction for that first bridge started in 1735. Architects Jose Garcia and Juan Camacho designed it with a single arch. However, this bridge was built too quickly and not very well. Sadly, the entire bridge collapsed in 1741. This accident caused the deaths of 50 people.
