Puerto Escondido is a big natural harbor in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. It's found in the Loreto Municipality, about 28 kilometers south of Loreto. You can find it on Federal Highway 1, right on the western coast of the Gulf of California.

A French architect named François Spoerry once planned a neighborhood here. However, only three buildings were ever constructed, and the project was later stopped.

The closest community to Puerto Escondido is Tripui. This is a private community where many Americans and Canadians live. It has a store, a hotel, and a restaurant. Tripui is only about 1 kilometer away from Puerto Escondido. A new neighborhood is being built on one of the original man-made islands, called Waicuri. The first part of this project will have 19 fancy homes right on the water, each with its own private dock. The first house was finished in July 2018.

About Puerto Escondido's Harbor

The main harbor at Puerto Escondido is quite large. It is about 1.8 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide. The entrance to the harbor is 30 meters wide. The water is at least 4.5 meters deep when the tide is low, and up to 7.5 meters deep when the tide is high.

This harbor is very popular with sailors who are visiting. It is known as one of the best "hurricane holes" in the Sea of Cortez. A hurricane hole is a safe place for boats to stay during a big storm.

Next to the main harbor, there was a marina project called "the Ellipse" that was never finished. There is also a somewhat protected area nearby. Sailors used to call this area the "Waiting Room," and local Mexicans called it "Enfermario."

The inner part of the harbor is managed by a company called Desarrolladora Marina Puerto Escondido. They have built a small marina and offer moorings for rent. You can also find a small boatyard, a grocery store, and a restaurant at the marina.

A private marina, called Marina Puerto Escondido, opened in 2013. This was part of a plan to build homes along the canals and another marina in the Ellipse area. The newest change by the owners is the addition of 80 new slips. These slips can hold very large boats, up to 220 feet long.

Nature and Exploration

Puerto Escondido is located inside the Loreto Bay National Marine Park. This park became a United Nations World Heritage Site in 2005. This means it is a very special place that is protected for its natural beauty and importance.

There are six large islands and many smaller islands and rocky areas close to the port. These islands are great for scuba diving and snorkeling. You can explore the amazing underwater world here.

The stunning Sierra Gigantes mountains are only about 2 kilometers from Puerto Escondido. These mountains have rugged canyon trails. They are perfect for hikers who love adventure and exploring nature.
