Puerto General San Martín is a small city in Argentina. It is located in the province of Santa Fe. The city is about 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Rosario, a much larger city. You can find it on the western bank of the Paraná River. In 2010, about 13,243 people lived there.
This city has a very good natural port. The river here is deep, making it easy for large ships to dock. This port is important for Argentina's trade. It is the last deepwater port on the Paraná River that can handle very big ships called Panamax vessels.
Puerto General San Martín is also a major center for industry and trade. It handles about half of Argentina's soybean exports. Many other farm products, like cereals and vegetable oils, are also shipped from here. This growth has brought jobs and development. However, it has also caused some pollution.

History of Puerto General San Martín
How the City Started
The city of Puerto General San Martín was founded by a man named Guillermo Kirk. He was from Scotland and moved to Argentina in 1866. Guillermo Kirk became a farmer, mostly growing grains.
On April 7, 1879, Kirk bought land along the Paraná River. He planned to build a village there and use the rest of the land for farming. In 1888, he wrote to the governor of the province with his idea. He wanted to call the new town Linda Vista, which means "Nice View".
Official Approval and New Name
The government approved Kirk's plan on February 16, 1889. They decided to name the town Kirkton after him. However, the town was not built exactly where he first planned. Guillermo Kirk returned to Scotland in 1898 after his wife passed away.
Puerto General San Martín officially became a city in 1987. The name honors General José de San Martín. He was a very important leader in Argentina's fight for independence from Spain. He also helped other South American countries gain their freedom. People often shorten the city's name to Puerto San Martín or just Puerto.
