Pugsley Medal facts for kids
The Pugsley Medal is a special award created in 1928 by a man named Cornelius Amory Pugsley. This medal honors people who have done great things to protect and improve parks and natural areas. It's like a "thank you" for their hard work in keeping our planet beautiful and green for everyone to enjoy.
At first, different groups were in charge of choosing who would receive the medal. The American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society used to pick the winners. Then, the National Park Foundation took over. Most recently, the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration has been responsible for selecting the awardees.
Until 1952, there were three types of medals: gold, silver, and bronze. In 1953, the awards changed to recognize achievements at different levels: national, state, and local.
