Puigmal (also called Puigmal d'Err) is a tall mountain in the Pyrenees mountain range. It sits right on the border between Spain and France. Its top is almost 2,910 meters (about 9,547 feet) high. This makes it one of the highest mountains in the eastern Pyrenees.

About Puigmal

Puigmal is part of a long mountain ridge that stretches for about 16 kilometers (10 miles). This ridge is over 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) high! The western part of the ridge has smooth, gentle slopes. This makes hiking quite easy there.

The eastern part of the ridge is different. It is made of tougher rock and has spiky, alpine scenery. This means it has sharp peaks and some parts are harder to climb. You can find many great hiking paths starting from a place called Vall de Núria.

The Split Summit

The very top of Puigmal is like a flat area, but it's split! A large cliff, over 20 meters (65 feet) high in some places, divides the summit for hundreds of meters. It looks like the eastern half of the mountain's top has slowly slid towards Nuria. You can clearly see this interesting feature if you look at satellite images. Other peaks in this mountain range also have similar splits.

Getting to Puigmal

There are several ways to reach the summit of Puigmal. From France, you can start from the Station d'Err ski resort, which is at 1,971 meters (6,467 feet). From Spain, popular starting points include Nuria (1,972 meters or 6,470 feet) or a new road from Queralbs that goes up to 2,000 meters (6,562 feet). All these routes are considered easy for a day trip. Many people think the path from Nuria is the most beautiful way to go.
