Pukka Pies is a family company. It was started in 1963 by Trevor Storer and Valerie Storer. At first, it was called "Trevor Storer's Home Made Pies." The name Pukka Pies was chosen in 1964.
Today, the company is simply called Pukka. Trevor and Valerie's sons, Tim and Andrew, now run the business. They have 360 people working at their bakery in Syston. Every day, they make an amazing 180,000 pies and pasties!
Pukka Pies and Football
Pukka Pies were first sold at a sports venue at Millmoor. This was the home ground of Rotherham United FC. Fans of Rotherham United are known for eating a lot of pies! They hold the record for the most pies eaten at a football match. They eat 40% more pies than the average Football League team's supporters.
Pukka Pies Promotion
Pukka Pies likes to support sports and events. They have sponsored parts of football stadiums. For example, the main stand at Boundary Park, home of Oldham Athletic AFC, is called the Pukka Pies stand. The main stand at New York Stadium, home of Rotherham, is also called the Pukka Pies stand.
The company was also an official sponsor of The England Band. This band also plays for Sheffield Wednesday.
Snooker Championship Sponsorship
Pukka Pies sponsored the 2009 UK Snooker Championship. The winner was Ding Junhui from China. As a special prize, he was given his body weight in meat pies! He weighed 69 kg, so he received 276 pies. Ding Junhui later decided to donate all the pies to a charity in Sheffield. The charity helps people who are homeless at Christmas.
