History of Punkatasset Hill

Early Days and Native Americans

Long ago, Native Americans lived around this hill. They called it Broad-topped Hill. People started farming on the hill in the 1600s. This farming continued for many years.

A Role in the Revolution

Punkatasset Hill played a part in American history. In 1775, the Battles of Lexington and Concord took place nearby. Local soldiers, called Minutemen, used the hill. It was a good spot to watch for British troops.

Fun and Games on the Hill

Later, in the late 1800s, you could see far from the top of the hill. On clear days, you might even spot Boston! Distant mountains like Mount Wachusett and Mount Monadnock were also visible.

In the early 1900s, Punkatasset Hill became a popular place for winter fun. It had Concord's only ski slope! There was never a ski lift to take people up. But exciting ski jumping contests were held there in the 1930s. Today, the slope is still clear. However, it is not used for skiing anymore.
