About the Purisimeño Language
The Purisimeño language was used by the Chumash people. They were Native Americans who lived in coastal California. Sadly, Purisimeño is no longer spoken today. It is considered an extinct language. This means no one speaks it as their main language anymore.
Who Studied Purisimeño?
Even though Purisimeño is not spoken, we know about it. This is thanks to people who studied and wrote down the language.
One person was Henry Wetherbee Henshaw. He was a scientist who studied languages. In 1884, he collected many Purisimeño words. This collection was like a dictionary. He called it "La Purrissima or Kagimuswas (Purismeno Chumash)."
Another important person was John P. Harrington. He also wrote down a lot about the language. He created a short description of its grammar. Grammar is how words are put together to make sentences.
More recently, Dr. Timothy Henry helped too. He works at a place called the Western Institute for Endangered Language Documentation. Dr. Henry created a full dictionary of the Purisimeño language. This helps us understand its words and meanings.
How Purisimeño Was Written
