History of Puruchuco
This amazing building complex was created by the Inca people.
What Puruchuco Was Like
Puruchuco is located in an area called Huaquerones. This area is known for its pyramids with ramps and one of the largest Inca cemeteries ever found. Archaeologists have been studying these sites for a long time.
There are other important Inca sites nearby, like San Juan de Pariachi and Huaycán. Puruchuco is the smallest of these sites. Even though Puruchuco was a palace for a local ruler, called a curaca, where he lived and worked, he likely reported to other, more powerful curacas.
Restoring the Site
The work to restore the palace and protect this archaeological zone began many years ago. Dr. Francisco Iriarte Brenner started the efforts, and Dr. Arturo Jiménez Borja continued them between 1953 and 1961.
Today, Puruchuco has its own site museum. This museum was the first of its kind in South America, showing how important it is to learn about the past. The site is located on the Central Highway at "km 4.5" in the Ate District.
Protecting the Past
Sadly, many of the old structures around Puruchuco have been damaged over time. Some areas have been vandalized, meaning they have been defaced. Also, some construction projects in nearby neighborhoods have accidentally harmed other ancient sites. Protecting these historical places is very important so we can continue to learn from them.
