Exploring the Quadrangle–Mattoon Street District

This historic district is located in the Metro Center area of Springfield. It is bordered by Chestnut Street to the west and State Street to the south. The district also includes properties on Mattoon, Salem, Edwards, and Elliot Streets. It is one of the few places in the Knowledge Corridor with many historic, red-brick Victorian row houses. These homes are covered by lovely tree canopies, making the streets feel very cozy.

A Look at the Buildings

The Quadrangle–Mattoon Street Historic District has many different kinds of homes. You can find detached Victorian houses and attached red-brick row houses. There are also churches designed by the famous architect H.H. Richardson. The buildings show off various architectural styles from the mid-19th century and late 19th to early 20th centuries. One of H.H. Richardson's first works, the Hispanic Baptist Church, is here. It is built in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, which uses heavy stone and rounded arches.

Why People Love Living Here

Since 2006, the Metro Center, especially the Quadrangle–Mattoon Street Historic District, has become a very popular place to live. More and more people are choosing to live here. They enjoy the city environment and the cultural activities available at good prices. This includes young adults, artists, and families looking for a lively community. The Mattoon Street neighborhood has some of Springfield's most well-known addresses.

Fun Things to See and Do

The historic district is named after the Quadrangle. This area features a group of five museums. These museums are built around the Dr. Seuss Memorial Sculpture Garden, which is a fun place to visit. Every fall, the neighborhood hosts a big event called "The Mattoon Street Arts Festival." It's a great chance to see local art and enjoy the community.

Recent additions to the area include a new Federal Courthouse on State Street. This building was designed by Moshe Safdie in 2008. Another interesting project was turning the old Technical High School into Massachusetts' Data Center. This is an example of adaptive reuse, where an old building is given a new purpose.
