Discovering Quail Valley's Past
How Quail Valley Began in Texas
The Quail Valley community started in 1969. It was developed by a person named James H. "Mac" MacNaughton. A friend suggested he look at land in the area.
MacNaughton decided to buy the land that became Quail Valley. He thought it would be a great place for a country club community. He named it Quail Valley because many quail birds lived there.
He first bought about 600 acres of land. He even lived in Quail Valley when it first opened. A golf course was added, and more land was bought later.
Most of the houses were built by the end of the 1970s. A few new homes were added in the years that followed.
Golf Tournaments and Changes
In the 1970s, Quail Valley hosted several golf tournaments. These were part of the Houston Open events.
In 1985, MacNaughton sold his land and gave up control of the country club. He passed away in 2008.
A part of the golf course, called the Executive Nine, was bought by the city. It was turned into a public park. This park was renamed MacNaughton Park in his honor.
