Sienna is a special kind of community in Fort Bend County, Texas, United States. It's called a census-designated place, which means it's a community that looks like a town but isn't officially a city. Sienna is also a large, planned community with many homes and facilities.

It used to be known as Sienna Plantation. Most of Sienna is near Missouri City, with a smaller part near Arcola. In 2020, about 20,204 people lived in Sienna. This was a big jump from 13,721 people in 2010.

History of Sienna

Sienna is built on land that was once a large farm. This farm grew sugar and cotton. In 1840, a man named Jonathan D. Waters bought the land. It had a dock along the Brazos River. Later, in 1872, a businessman from Houston, Thomas W. House, bought the property.

In 1913, former Houston mayor Thomas H. Scanlan became the owner. After he passed away, his family's foundation, the Scanlan Foundation, took care of the land. This foundation helped the Catholic Diocese of Houston. From the 1950s to 1972, the land was used as a retreat center by the Cenacle Sisters.

Developing the Community

In the 1970s, a developer named Larry Johnson started his company. In 1978, he began planning the Sienna community. By the mid-1980s, Johnson's company started building houses and roads. They also built a 10-mile-long levee to protect the area from floods. However, the project slowed down during a tough economic time in the 1980s.

The developer started focusing on the project again in 1994. A billionaire developer from the Philippines, Tan Yu, helped organize Sienna's growth. By 2009, about 5,000 out of 5,200 houses in Sienna were lived in.

Name Change

In May 2019, the community decided to change its name. It went from "Sienna Plantation" to simply "Sienna." This change happened because residents and groups on social media asked for it.
