History of Quartu Sant'Elena
The name of the city comes from two things. Quartum miles is a Latin phrase meaning "four miles". This refers to its distance from Cagliari. The second part of the name, Sant'Elena, comes from Saint Helena. She was the mother of Emperor Constantine.
Early History and Roman Times
People have lived in Quartu for a very long time. We know this from things found in places like Cepola and Is Mortorius. These findings date back to the time before the Nuragic period, and also to the Nuragic and Phoenician times. The Nuragic civilization built special stone towers called nuraghi.
Later, during the Roman period, more evidence of life was found. This includes a graveyard and some tombs.
Medieval and Aragonese Periods
In the 11th century AD, Sardinia was split into four areas called Giudicati. Quartu, which included fourteen smaller villages, was part of the Giudicato of Cagliari.
Around 1066, Quartu was given to the archbishop of Cagliari. Then it went back to Judge Torchitorio II of Cagliari. During the time when the Aragonese ruled, Quartu faced many problems. There were times of hunger, sickness like the plague and malaria, and constant attacks from Saracen pirates. This was a difficult time for all of Sardinia.
French Attacks and Feudalism
In 1793, soldiers from France landed on the coast of Quartu. They wanted to take over the whole island. But the people of Quartu, led by Antonio Pisanu, fought back bravely. They pushed the French soldiers away after a tough battle.
The system of feudalism, where land was controlled by powerful lords, started under the Aragonese. In Quartu, this system ended in 1836. In 1956, the President of Italy, Giovanni Gronchi, officially made Quartu Sant'Elena a "city."
