Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Quicuchabe were a group of American Indians who lived in what is now Texas. They are known for joining a Spanish explorer named Juan Domínguez de Mendoza on a long journey across Texas in the late 1600s. This journey helped map out parts of Texas and showed which Native American groups were living there at the time.

The Quicuchabe People

The Quicuchabe were one of about 20 different Native American groups. These groups decided to travel with Mendoza during his expedition. We don't know much about the Quicuchabe people themselves. This is because Mendoza's records didn't say exactly where they lived or which larger tribe they belonged to.

A Journey Across Texas

Between 1683 and 1684, Juan Domínguez de Mendoza led an expedition. He traveled from the area near El Paso to the region around what is now San Angelo. This was a long and challenging trip across a vast land. The Quicuchabe joined Mendoza's group at some point during this journey. It's not clear exactly when or where they met up.

Where Did They Live?

Because Mendoza's notes weren't specific, it's hard to pinpoint the Quicuchabe's exact home. However, historians believe they likely lived somewhere between the Pecos River and the San Angelo area. This region was a busy place. Many different tribes lived there. Some tribes, like the Apache, were expanding their territory. This often pushed other groups, including the Quicuchabe, to move around. Their decision to join Mendoza might have been related to these movements.
