Quihi is a small community located in Medina County, in the state of Texas. It is about 9 miles north of Hondo. Quihi sits where Farm to Market Road 2676 meets Quihi Creek. In 1936, a special gray granite marker was placed in Quihi. This marker, Number 5537, celebrates the 100-year anniversary of Texas.

The Beginning of Quihi: Early Settlers and Challenges

In 1845, a man named Henri Castro planned the town of Quihi. He was an empresario, which means he was given land by the government to bring new settlers. He chose a spot near Quihi Lake.

First Families Arrive in Quihi

The first families to settle in Quihi arrived in 1846. They came from a region in Europe called Alsace. These brave settlers faced many challenges. They had to protect their new homes from various dangers. This continued for many years, until the 1870s.

Early Community Buildings in Quihi

The Bethlehem Lutheran Church was built in 1852. It is still an active church today. The Lindeburg School of Quihi opened its doors in 1856. This school taught children until 1907. After that, a new school was built about two miles west of the original site.

Quihi's Post Office History

The first post office in Quihi opened in 1854. Louis Boehle was the very first postmaster. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office. The Quihi post office closed in 1872. After it closed, mail for Quihi was sent through New Fountain.

Quihi in Recent Times: The Gun Club and Population

The Quihi Schützen Verein, which means "marksmen club," started in 1890. This club is still active today. It is now known as the Quihi Gun Club. The club is very popular and has over 1,000 members from all over the county.
