The Quinnipiac Brewery, also known as Brewery Square, is a group of old brick buildings in New Haven, Connecticut. You can find it at 19-23 River Street in the Fair Haven area. This complex started being built in 1892 and was used as a brewery until the 1930s. It's a special example of a large brewery from the late 1800s. In 1983, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important historical site. Today, most of these buildings are homes where people live.

Exploring the Quinnipiac Brewery
The Quinnipiac Brewery complex is located in a part of Fair Haven that mostly has homes. It covers about 2.5 acres, which is roughly the size of two football fields. The area is bordered by Front Street, Ferry Street, and the Quinnipiac River.
What the Brewery Looks Like
The most important building is the main brewery. It has six stories and was built in 1882. Its current front was added in 1896. This building is designed in a style called Romanesque. This means it has strong, rounded arches and thick walls, similar to old Roman buildings.
Other important buildings include an office building, also from the 1880s. There is also a bottling plant, which was built in 1916. The way the brewery was planned shows how making beer changed. It went from smaller local breweries to bigger, more industrial ones.
How Beer Making Changed Here
This brewery had larger buildings above ground. This was possible because of new ways to keep things cold, like refrigeration. The bottling plant was a new idea at the time. It was built across a public street (East Pearl Street). This was done to follow tax rules.
The Brewery's History
The Quinnipiac Brewery was started in 1882. Two German-American men, Peter Schleipmann and William Spittler, founded it. This was when lager beer was becoming very popular. The business did very well and grew several times until the mid-1910s.
However, the brewery had to close when Prohibition began in 1919. Prohibition was a time in the United States when making, selling, and transporting alcoholic drinks was not allowed.
What Happened After Prohibition
During Prohibition, the plant was sold to another company. This company made non-alcoholic drinks, like cereal beverages. After Prohibition ended, the New Haven Brewing Company bought the plant. They made beer there for about ten years.
After that, the plant was empty or used as a warehouse until the late 1970s. Since then, the buildings have been changed. They are now used as homes for people, which is called "adaptively repurposed."
