José Quintín Bandera Betancourt (born around 1834 – died 1906) was an important military leader in Cuba. He fought bravely against the Spanish during the Cuban War of Independence. In 1906, Bandera led a group of fighters towards Havana, the capital city. He was killed near Punta Brava, a village close to Havana.

Quintín Bandera's Life and Bravery

Quintín Bandera was a true hero of the Cuban War of Independence. People knew him for his incredible courage and fearlessness. He became famous for breaking through the Spanish lines that separated Pinar del Río Province from Havana Province. He fought alongside other important generals like Calixto García and Máximo Gómez. Bandera was especially popular among the Afro-Cuban people across the island.

In 1899, he was seen as a leader for the Afro-Cuban community in Santiago de Cuba Province. Thousands of people welcomed him to Havana in 1900. They carried him through the city streets for hours! Bandera was known for giving powerful speeches. He spoke about how the new Cuban government wasn't treating its black citizens fairly.

The Uprising of 1906

In 1906, a new uprising began against Tomás Estrada Palma, who was Cuba's first president after independence. There had been smaller protests the year before. But in August 1906, a group led by Pino Guerra started a more serious rebellion in Pinar del Río Province.

During this time, General Bandera, who was around 72 years old, became involved. He led about a thousand black fighters towards Havana. They even took over a railroad station. Bandera had lost his government job. He went to the Cuban senate, hoping to become the chief of police. Instead, he was made a "parliamentary doorkeeper," which was a much smaller role. Because he was so disappointed, he decided to join the fight.

Bandera's Final Battle

Quintín Bandera made his last stand at the Silveira farm near Punta Brava. He was with about twenty of his followers. Troops led by General Freyre Andrade surrounded them. A group of Rural Guards then attacked the farm. Most of Bandera's fighters managed to escape. Only Bandera and two of his friends remained.

Reports say he was shot many times. Yet, he kept fighting with his machete until the soldiers sadly defeated him. Bandera's death temporarily stopped the 1906 uprising. He was about 72 years old when he died.
