The Journey of the Quiver River

Where Does It Start and Go?

The Quiver River actually begins from two smaller parts: the Upper Quiver River and the Lower Quiver River. These two parts meet northwest of a town called Sumner, Mississippi.

From its start, the Quiver River flows south. It travels through three different counties in Mississippi: Tallahatchie County, Leflore County, and Sunflower County. Finally, the Quiver River flows into the Sunflower River. This meeting point is northwest of the town of Moorhead, Mississippi.

A River in History: The Civil War

The Quiver River played a small part in American history during the American Civil War. This war was fought between the northern states (the Union) and the southern states (the Confederacy) from 1861 to 1865.

On May 30, 1863, a Confederate boat named Emma Bett was captured on the Quiver River. Union forces then set the boat on fire near where the Quiver River meets the Sunflower River.

Another Confederate steamboat, the "Dewdrop," also met its end in the Quiver River. This happened north of Moorhead, Mississippi. The owner of the "Dewdrop," Sherman Parisot, set his own boat on fire. He did this when Union troops were very close to capturing it, to prevent them from taking control of his vessel.
