Rèinigeadal (also called Rhenigidale) is a small village in Harris, which is part of the Western Isles in Scotland. It is located on the east coast of Harris, about 8 kilometers (5 miles) east of Tarbert. The village sits near the entrance to Loch Seaforth.
For a long time, Rèinigeadal was very isolated. Until 1990, there was no road connecting it to other places. People could only reach the village by walking about 5 kilometers (3 miles) along a hill path or by boat. The building of the road in 1990 was a big event for the community. This road now connects Rèinigeadal to the main A859.

Life in Rèinigeadal
Rèinigeadal is a very small place. It does not have any shops, restaurants, or pubs. This means residents need to travel to other towns for supplies.
Electricity and Modern Conveniences
The village was quite remote, even for basic services. The National Grid only started supplying electricity to the islanders in 1980. The local youth hostel, a place where travelers can stay cheaply, did not get electricity until June 1990. This shows how recently modern services arrived in this quiet corner of Scotland.
The Youth Hostel
Rèinigeadal is home to a youth hostel. This hostel is run by the Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust. It first opened in 1962 and was the very first hostel started by the Gatliff Trust. Youth hostels offer simple, affordable accommodation, often in beautiful, remote locations.
Unique Telephone Number
Rèinigeadal once had a very special telephone number. It was known for having Britain's last single-digit telephone number: Rhenigidale 1. This unique number was changed in March 1990 as telephone systems became more modern.
