R C Stevens: A Baseball Story
R C Stevens began his baseball journey when he was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1952. He played for the Pirates from 1958 to 1960. Later, he was traded to the Washington Senators in December 1960. He played one season with the Senators in 1961.
A Special Moment: Pinch Hitting History
R C Stevens made a unique mark in the history of the modern Washington Senators team. He was the very first player to come into a game as a pinch hitter for the team.
This happened on April 10, 1961. It was the bottom of the ninth inning, a very important part of the game. Stevens stepped up to bat for the team's catcher, Pete Daley. He faced the opposing team's relief pitcher, Frank Baumann.
Stevens hit a ground ball, which helped his teammate Jim Mahoney move from first base to second base. Even though the next batter made the final out and the Senators lost the game 4–3 to the Chicago White Sox, Stevens' moment was still a special part of the team's history.
His Baseball Skills and Stats
During his time in Major League Baseball, R C Stevens played in 104 games. He had a batting average of .210. This means he got a hit about 21% of the times he was at bat.
He also hit 8 home runs and had 21 RBI (runs batted in). An RBI means he helped a teammate score a run. Stevens scored 21 runs himself.
When it came to playing first base, Stevens was very good at catching the ball. He made only two errors in 426 chances to field the ball. This gave him a high fielding percentage of .995. This shows he was a reliable player on defense.
