Kalasuri Ratnadurai Sivagurunathan (born October 7, 1931 – died August 9, 2003) was an important person from Sri Lanka. He was a journalist, which means he wrote for newspapers. He was also a lawyer, an academic (someone who teaches at a university), and the editor of a newspaper called Thinakaran.
Early Life and Education
Sivagurunathan was born on October 7, 1931, in a place called Kantharamadam in northern Ceylon (which is now Sri Lanka).
He went to several schools, including St. John's College, Jaffna, Jaffna Hindu College, and Zahira College, Colombo. After finishing school, he joined the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya, to continue his studies.
Later, he went to Ceylon Law College. There, he studied law and became an advocate, which is a type of lawyer who speaks for people in court.
His Career as a Journalist
Sivagurunathan started working at the Thinakaran newspaper in 1955. He began as a reporter, finding and writing news stories. He also worked as a sub-editor, helping to prepare articles for printing. He was also a lobby correspondent, reporting on what happened in important government meetings.
He also worked for another newspaper called Dinamina. Both Thinakaran and Dinamina were published by a company called Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited.
In 1957, he became the news editor of Thinakaran. This meant he was in charge of all the news content. By 1961, he became the chief editor, which is the top person in charge of the entire newspaper. He held this important job for a very long time, until 1994.
While working as a journalist, Sivagurunathan also earned a Master's degree from the University of Jaffna. He was also the president of the Working Journalists Association of Sri Lanka. This group helps journalists in the country. He was also a member of the Press Council, which is a group that looks after how newspapers and media work.
Later Life and Achievements
After his main career, Sivagurunathan became a visiting lecturer. This means he taught classes at places like Sri Lanka Law College and the Open University of Sri Lanka.
He was also the president of the Colombo Tamil Sangam, a cultural organization. For all his hard work and contributions to journalism, he was given the Kalasuri title. This is a special national honour in Sri Lanka, given to people who have done great things for their country.
