Rachel Cargle is an American social justice activist, public speaker, and author. She works to make society fairer for everyone.

Early Life and Education

Rachel Cargle grew up in Green, Ohio. Her mother had polio, and her father passed away when Rachel was young. Rachel and her mother lived in Section 8 housing. This is a program that helps people afford homes. Living in a wealthy area, Rachel saw how different her life was from her white friends. This made her think about money differences.

After high school, Rachel joined the Air National Guard. She served for six years. She says her time in the military made her question big organizations. She learned not to automatically trust that they always help people.

Rachel studied anthropology and sociology. She went to the University of Toledo for two years. Then, at age 23, she moved to Washington, D.C.. Later, she attended Columbia University. However, she decided to leave before finishing her degree. This was after a Black student was followed by police on campus. He had not shown his student ID when asked. Rachel said she "couldn’t stomach paying the university money anymore."

Career and Activism

In 2017, a picture of Rachel and her friend went viral. They were holding signs at the 2017 Women's March. Rachel's sign said, "If You Don’t Fight for All Women You Fight for No Women." This photo brought Rachel national attention. People praised her important message.

Rachel started learning more about feminist issues. She then gave popular talks at many universities. Her lecture series was called "Unpacking White Feminism." Rachel works to promote Intersectionality in her talks. Intersectionality means understanding how different parts of a person's identity, like race and gender, combine to affect their experiences.

Rachel mainly focuses on anti-racism activism. Her Instagram account grew a lot since 2016. It went from 355,000 to 1.7 million followers.

The Loveland Foundation

Rachel Cargle started the Loveland Foundation. This happened after a successful GoFundMe campaign. The Loveland Foundation is a nonprofit organization. It helps Black women and girls get access to therapy. Therapy is a way to talk about feelings and problems with a trained professional. Rachel has also spoken out against making "wellness" just another product to buy.

Writing and Recognition

In 2019, Rachel studied at the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research. She also studied with Imani Perry from Princeton University. In 2020, she opened a writing center and bookstore. It is in Akron, Ohio, and is called Elizabeth’s Bookshop & Writing Centre.

Rachel has a book coming out with The Dial Press. It will explore how race, feminism, and womanhood connect. Her work has also been shown in major publications. These include The Washington Post, Glamour Magazine, PopSugar, and Essence.

In 2020, Global Citizen named Rachel a notable activist. They recognized her for teaching people about racial injustice, systemic racism, feminism, and white supremacy.
