The Rachel Carson House is a special historic home located in Colesville, Maryland. This area is close to Silver Spring, Maryland. The house was built in 1956. It's a typical ranch-style house from that time. A famous writer named Rachel Carson lived here. She wrote her very important book, Silent Spring, in this house in 1962. Because of its link to Rachel Carson, the house became a National Historic Landmark in 1991.

Exploring the Rachel Carson House

This one-story house looks like many homes built in the 1950s. It is made of brick and has an asphalt shingle roof. Inside, the house still looks much like it did when Rachel Carson lived there.

Inside the Home

When you enter, the living room is on your right. Rachel Carson's study, where she worked, is in a corner off the living room. The kitchen and dining room are at the back of the house. The bedrooms are located to the left of the entrance. There is also a basement with more rooms.

Carson's Garden and Nature Space

Rachel Carson loved nature, and her yard shows it. Most of her original landscaping is still there. There is only a small area of grass. The yard is filled with trees like evergreens, and beautiful plants like azaleas and daffodils. This natural, wooded space was very important to her.

The History of Rachel Carson's Home

Rachel Carson herself helped design this house. She wanted a home that had "all the special things that I need." She started writing her famous book, Silent Spring, here in 1958.

Writing Silent Spring

Rachel Carson usually wrote her books at a cottage in Maine. But for Silent Spring, she spent more and more time at her Silver Spring home. This was because her research involved looking at many public documents. She also needed to talk with many scholars. Her health also made it easier for her to work from home.

Carson's Final Years

Silent Spring was published in 1962. After the book came out, Rachel Carson spent most of her last two years in this Silver Spring house. She passed away on April 14, 1964. The house remains a symbol of her important work.
