Rachel Wainer Apter (born July 22, 1980) is an American lawyer and judge. She is currently a justice on the Supreme Court of New Jersey. This is the highest court in the state of New Jersey.

Early Life and Education
Rachel Wainer Apter grew up in Rockaway, New Jersey. She went to Morris Hills High School. After high school, she studied at the University of Pennsylvania. She graduated with very high honors. Then, she went to Harvard Law School and earned her law degree in 2007, also with high honors.
Career as a Lawyer and Judge
After law school, Rachel Wainer Apter worked for several important judges. She was a "law clerk" for Judge Jed S. Rakoff and Chief Judge Robert Katzmann. A law clerk helps a judge with research and writing.
Working for the U.S. Supreme Court
She then worked for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the Supreme Court of the United States. This is the highest court in the entire country. After that, she worked as a lawyer for a private law firm. She also worked for the ACLU. The ACLU is a group that works to protect people's rights.
Public Service in New Jersey
Later, Rachel Wainer Apter became a lawyer for the Attorney General of New Jersey. She then became the director of the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights. This division works to protect people from unfair treatment.
While working for the Attorney General, she helped protect a program called DACA. This program helps young people who came to the U.S. as children.
Becoming a Supreme Court Justice
On March 15, 2021, Governor Phil Murphy chose Rachel Wainer Apter to be a justice on the Supreme Court of New Jersey. She was chosen to replace Justice Jaynee LaVecchia, who was retiring.
Her nomination was delayed for a while. However, Governor Murphy nominated her again in January 2022. On October 17, 2022, her nomination was approved. She officially became a justice on October 21, 2022.

Rachel Wainer Apter lives in Englewood, New Jersey. She is married and has three children.
