Murals for Change
In the spring and summer of 2020, many artists painted murals on plywood. These murals covered storefronts in downtown Oakland. They were a response to important events happening at that time. Rachel Wolfe-Goldsmith was one of these artists. Her mural on 15th Street is called We Can Breathe.
During this time, the Bay Area Mural Program worked with the African American Arts & Culture Complex. With Rachel as creative director, they organized a huge Black Lives Matter mural in San Francisco. This mural was so big it covered three city blocks.
Important Murals
She Will Rise Mural
A group called She Will Rise asked Rachel Wolfe-Goldsmith to paint a mural in Washington, D.C. This group works to help get a Black woman on the United States Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the country. Rachel finished this mural in October 2020. It shows Black women judges and activists.
Social Justice and Community Art
In November 2020, it was announced that Rachel would paint another mural. She worked with fellow muralist Joshua Mays on this project. This mural focuses on social justice, which means fairness and equality for everyone. Kaiser Permanente and ABG Art Group asked them to create this art. The mural was first shown outside Kaiser's offices in downtown Oakland. It is planned to move to Liberation Park later. Rachel also painted a three-story mural in downtown Oakland. It features artist Stoney Creation and model Yanni Brump.
Black Panther Party Mural
In February 2021, a homeowner in West Oakland asked Rachel to paint a special mural. This mural is on the side of her house. It shows women from the Black Panther Party. The Black Panther Party was a group that worked for civil rights and community programs. The mural is 30 feet tall. It is based on photos taken by Stephen Shames. The mural shows Delores Henderson, Angie Johnson, Lauren Williams, and Williams's daughter Mary. It currently has the names of over 300 women. The plan is for the mural to be 2,000 square feet when it is finished. Black Panther leader Ericka Huggins helped with the project.
