Rafael Gómez Nieto was born in 1921. When he was young, he joined the army. He fought in the Spanish Civil War with a group known as "Lleva del Biberó." This group was made up of very young soldiers. Life After the Spanish Civil War
After the Spanish Civil War ended, Rafael went to France. He was held in a camp called Saint-Cyprien. About four months later, he managed to get to Algeria with his father. His father had been in another camp called Argelés internment camp.
Fighting in World War II
During World War II, the Allies (countries fighting against Germany) invaded North Africa. This event was called Operation Torch. After this, Rafael joined a special group. He became part of the 9th Company (known as La Nueve). This company was part of the 2nd Armored Division of the French army. La Nueve was famous for being one of the first Allied units to enter Paris and help free it from German control.
Later Life and Legacy
Rafael Gómez Nieto lived a long life. He passed away on March 31, 2020. He was living in a nursing home in Strasbourg, France. He died from COVID-19 during the coronavirus pandemic. Rafael Gómez Nieto was the very last living soldier from La Nueve. He is remembered for his bravery and service in two major conflicts.
