Rafael María Baralt y Pérez (born July 3, 1810 – died January 4, 1860) was a very important person from Venezuela. He was a diplomat, which means he represented his country in other nations. He was also a famous writer, a philologist (someone who studies languages and words), and a historian (someone who studies and writes about the past). He made history by being the first person from Latin America to become a member of the Real Academia Española, a very important group in Spain that looks after the Spanish language.

Early Life and Education

Rafael María Baralt was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, on July 3, 1810. His father, Miguel Antonio Baralt, helped build the famous Baralt Theater in Maracaibo. His mother, Ana Francisca Pérez, was from the Dominican Republic.
