Rafael Emilio Valdez Díaz was born on December 17, 1967. He is a former professional baseball player from the Dominican Republic. Rafael played as a pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played for the San Diego Padres team in 1990.
Playing Career
Rafael Valdez started his professional baseball journey as a shortstop. This is a player who fields between second and third base. He played this position for two seasons. These were in 1986 and 1987 with the Charleston Rainbows.
Becoming a Pitcher
In 1988, Rafael changed his main role. He became a pitcher, which is the player who throws the ball to the batter. In 1989, he achieved something very special. Rafael pitched a perfect game for the Riverside Red Wave. A perfect game means no opposing player reached base during the entire game.
After Major League Baseball
After his time in Major League Baseball, Rafael continued to play. He pitched in minor league baseball until 2003. Minor league teams are professional teams that are not part of MLB. In his final year, he played for the Allentown Ambassadors. This team was part of the Northeast League.
