Early Life and Education
Rafael Valdivieso was born on November 2, 1804. His parents were Manuel Joaquín Valdivieso and Maciel y de Mercedes Zañartu y Manso de Velasco. He chose to study law and successfully finished his studies. He became a lawyer on May 23, 1825, after graduating from the Universidad de San Felipe.
Becoming a Priest
Even though he was a lawyer, Valdivieso felt called to serve the church. He was ordained as a priest on July 27, 1834. This special ceremony was performed by the Bishop of Santiago, Manuel Vicuña Larraín.
His Work as Archbishop
Before becoming an archbishop, Valdivieso worked as a missionary. Missionaries travel to different places to teach people about their faith. He worked in areas like Chiloé and the Atacama Region in Chile.
Later, he became the Dean of Theology at the University of Chile. This meant he was a leader in teaching about religious studies. On October 4, 1847, a very important church leader, Pius IX, chose him to be the Archbishop of Santiago. This was a huge responsibility, making him the head of the Catholic Church in a large part of Chile.
Important Contributions
Rafael Valdivieso was known for his strong leadership. He took part in the First Vatican Council, a major meeting of Catholic leaders from all over the world, held between 1869 and 1870. During his time as archbishop, many people believed he greatly helped to make the Chilean clergy (the priests and other church officials) more honest and less corrupt.
His personal motto, or guiding phrase, was Verum in luce. Bonum in cruce. Virgo in omni patria et in corde. This means "Truth in light. Good in the cross. Virgin in every country and in the heart."
Later Years and Legacy
Rafael Valdivieso passed away on June 8, 1878. He was buried in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago, a very important church building. After his death, Mariano Casanova y Casanova took over as Archbishop in 1886. Valdivieso is remembered as a significant figure in the history of the Catholic Church in Chile.
