Rafaela Lopes Silva (born April 24, 1992) is a famous Brazilian judoka. She has won many important medals in the sport of judo. Rafaela earned gold medals at the World Judo Championships in 2013 and 2022. She also won a gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She competes in the 57 kg weight class. Rafaela is also a third sergeant in the Navy of Brazil.

In August 2013, Rafaela Silva made history. She became the first Brazilian woman to ever win a world championship title in Judo.

Early Life and Training

Rafaela Silva grew up in a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro called Cidade de Deus. When she was younger, she loved playing football with other kids. Her parents, Luiz Carlos and Zenilda Silva, were worried about fights in the streets. So, when Rafaela was 7 years old, they signed her and her sister, Raquel, up for judo classes.

They joined the Institute Reaction, a new judo project in Cidade de Deus. It was started by a former judo athlete named Flávio Canto. Rafaela found that judo taught her important things like discipline and respect. She started to take the sport very seriously. Judo helped her see the world and support her family.

At the 2012 London Olympics, Rafaela was disqualified from a match. This happened because of an illegal leg grab during her fight against Hedvig Karakas from Hungary. After this, she felt very sad.
