Rafaela Lopes Silva (born April 24, 1992) is a famous Brazilian judoka. She has won many important medals in the sport of judo. Rafaela earned gold medals at the World Judo Championships in 2013 and 2022. She also won a gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She competed in the –57 kg weight class.

In August 2013, Rafaela made history. She became the first Brazilian woman to win a world championship title in judo. She is also a third sergeant in the Navy of Brazil. She is part of the Military Sports Department.

Early Life and Training

Rafaela Silva grew up in a community in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This area is known as Cidade de Deus. When she was younger, she loved playing football with other kids. They played on a dirt field near her home.

Her parents, Luiz Carlos and Zenilda Silva, wanted to keep her safe. When Rafaela was 7 years old, they signed her up for judo classes. Her sister, Raquel, also joined. They trained at the Institute Reaction in Cidade de Deus. This program was started by a former athlete named Flávio Canto.

Rafaela shared how judo changed her life. She said she started judo in 2000. Her father wanted her to learn discipline. She learned to respect others and took the sport seriously. Judo helped her see the world. She uses her earnings to support herself and her family.

Rafaela Silva won her first big medal in 2011. She earned a silver medal at the 2011 World Judo Championships in Paris. Two years later, at the 2013 World Judo Championships in Rio de Janeiro, she made history. She became the first Brazilian woman to win a gold medal at a World Judo Championship. She won against Marti Malloy from the United States in the final match.

She achieved another amazing victory at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She won a gold medal by defeating Sumiya Dorjsuren from Mongolia in the final. This was a huge moment for her and for Brazil.

At the 2012 London Olympics, Rafaela faced a challenge. She was disqualified from a match for an illegal move. This made her feel sad when she returned home. However, she bounced back. In December 2012, she won a bronze medal at the Judo Grand Slam Tokyo.

Rafaela continued to compete and win medals. She earned gold and bronze medals in 2019. These were at the 2019 Pan American Games and the 2019 Judo World Championships. Later, she faced a temporary ban from competition. She appealed the decision, but the ban was upheld.

Other Sports Pursuits

During her temporary break from judo, Rafaela decided to try a new sport. She began training in mixed martial arts (MMA). She trained at Peregrino Fight Academy. This gym is known for athletes like Joilton Santos and Cláudio Silva. Rafaela was expected to compete in the Flyweight division.
