General Raffaele Cadorna

Raffaele Cadorna (born February 9, 1815 – died February 6, 1897) was an important Italian general. He helped lead the effort to unite Italy into one country in the mid-1800s. This big change is known as the unification of Italy.

Early Life and Training

Raffaele Cadorna was born in Milan, Italy. When he was 17, in 1832, he joined the military academy in Turin. This academy was part of the army of Piedmont, which was a powerful kingdom in Italy at the time.

In 1840, Cadorna became part of the engineer corps. This group of soldiers specialized in building and repairing things like bridges and fortifications.

Early Military Career

Cadorna first saw action during the First Italian War of Independence. From March 1848 to August 1849, he led a group of volunteer engineers in Lombardy. This war was fought to free parts of Italy from foreign rule.

In 1855, Cadorna served with Piedmontese forces in the Crimean War. Later, he showed great skill during the Second Italian War of Independence. He was especially noted for his bravery at the Battle of San Martino. Because of his excellent service, he was promoted to Colonel in 1859.

Key Roles and Campaigns

In 1859, Cadorna was made Minister of War for Tuscany. Tuscany was a region in Italy that was becoming part of the new unified nation.

Later, he became a lieutenant general and led a large group of soldiers. During the Seven Weeks War in 1866, he led successful operations. His forces fought against the Austrians in the Friuli campaign from June to July.

Unifying Italy

Raffaele Cadorna is most famous for his role in the final steps of Italy's unification. He led the invasion of the Papal States, which was a territory ruled by the Pope.

On September 20, 1870, Cadorna's troops captured the city of Rome. This event was very important because it completed the unification of Italy. For this great service, he was named a Senator the next year.

Later Life and Legacy

Soon after the unification of Italy, Raffaele Cadorna retired from public life. He lived in Tuscany until he passed away in 1897.

His family continued to serve Italy in important ways. His son, Luigi Cadorna, became a Field Marshal. He was the Italian chief of staff for part of World War I. Raffaele Cadorna's grandson, Raffaele Cadorna Jr., was also a general. He commanded the Italian resistance during World War II.
