Life and Career of Rageh Daoud
Rageh Daoud was born in Cairo, Egypt. He started learning music at the Cairo Conservatoire when he was just nine years old. Later, he studied how to compose music with a teacher named Gamal Abdel-Rahim. He graduated in 1977. He also learned to play the piano with Ettore Puglisi.
In 1977, Rageh Daoud earned his diploma in music composition with high honors. He became an assistant teacher at the Conservatoire in 1978. In 1981, he received a special scholarship to study composition even more. He went to the Vienna Music Academy in Austria. There, he studied with Professor T. Christian David and Frances Burt. In 1987, he earned his graduate diploma, and in 1988, he received his master's degree from the Vienna Music Academy.
At the end of 1988, Rageh Daoud came back to Egypt. He continued teaching at the Cairo Conservatoire. Today, he is a professor in the Composition and Conducting Department. He has created many pieces for orchestras, chamber groups (small groups of musicians), and piano.
Rageh Daoud is very active in the music world, both in Egypt and in other countries. His music has been performed in many cities around the world. These include Cairo, Vienna, Paris, London, and many more.
He has won several awards for his film music. These awards came from important film festivals in Cairo and Alexandria. He also started and led the Chamber Orchestra of the Hanager Center. This orchestra helps to share new Egyptian music with more people.
In 1997, the Ministry of Culture gave him the State Encouragement award for his piece called Two Portrait for String Orchestra. That same year, he was a judge at a piano competition in Italy. He was also invited to play his music in Italy and Germany.
Since 2001, he has been in charge of the Committee for Music, Opera, and Ballet. This committee is part of the Supreme Council of Culture.
In 2017, Rageh Daoud created the music for the new national anthem of Mauritania. This is a very important job for a composer!
