The Ragged School Museum is a special place in London where you can step back in time! It's a museum that shows what life and school were like for children during the Victorian era, especially those who were poor. The museum opened its doors in 1990. It is located in the very same buildings that used to be a real "Ragged School" called Dr Barnardo's Copperfield Road Ragged School.

What is the Ragged School Museum?

This museum helps us understand a big part of history. It teaches us about the Ragged School Union, which started in 1844. This group helped set up schools for children who couldn't afford to go to regular schools. The museum is run by amazing volunteers who want to share these important stories.

A Look Back: The Original Ragged School

The original Copperfield Road Ragged School first opened in 1877. It was built to help children living in the Mile End area of London get a basic education. At the time, it was the largest school of its kind! Many children who might not have had any other chance to learn came here.

Helping Children in Victorian Times

This school was very popular. On weekdays, more than 1,000 students attended classes. On Sundays, an incredible 2,400 children came for Sunday school. The school closed in 1908. By then, the government had created enough new schools to take over the important work of educating all children. Even after closing, the school team continued to organize fun events for the local community. Later, the building was used as a factory.

The Museum Today

Today, the museum brings the past to life. It has a classroom set up exactly how it would have looked in Victorian times. You can imagine what it was like to learn there! There's also a typical kitchen from 1900, showing how families in London's East End lived. Other areas of the museum explore the local history and culture of the East End.

Exploring Victorian Life

The museum is housed in three old warehouses next to a canal. Local residents saved these buildings from being torn down in the 1980s. A special group was set up in 1990 to look after the property. In December 2016, the museum received a large grant of £4.3 million. This money helped restore the buildings and make the museum even better for visitors.

Where to Find It

The Ragged School Museum is located at 46–50 Copperfield Road in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It's right across from Mile End Park, a lovely green space in the city.
