Ragnar Sigurðsson (born 19 June 1986) is a famous Icelandic former footballer. He played as a centre-back, which is a defensive position. Ragnar started his career with the club Fylkir in Iceland.

He then played for many different teams around Europe. These included IFK Göteborg in Sweden, Copenhagen in Denmark, and clubs in Russia like FC Krasnodar, FC Rubin Kazan, and FC Rostov. He also played for Fulham in England and Rukh Lviv in Ukraine. Ragnar retired from playing football in 2021, returning to his first club, Fylkir.

Ragnar was also a key player for the Iceland national team. He played 97 games for his country between 2007 and 2020. He helped Iceland reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament. He also represented Iceland at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. After his playing career, Ragnar became an assistant manager for Fram Reykjavik in November 2022. In July 2023, he became the caretaker manager for the team.

Ragnar Sigurðsson played for many different football clubs during his career. He was known for his strong defense and leadership on the field.

Playing for IFK Göteborg in Sweden

After playing for Fylkir in Iceland, Ragnar moved to the Swedish club IFK Göteborg in 2006. He made his first appearance in the Allsvenskan league on 6 April 2007. Ragnar played in almost all of his team's league matches that year. He formed a great defensive partnership with Mattias Bjärsmyr. Together, they helped the team win the Allsvenskan 2007 league title.

In his second season, Ragnar played 29 out of 30 matches. The club also won the Supercupen and Svenska Cupen in 2008. Ragnar was a very talented defender, and many big clubs in Europe were interested in him.

Joining F.C. Copenhagen in Denmark

On 30 May 2011, Ragnar signed a four-year contract with the Danish champions, F.C. Copenhagen. This was a big move for his career.

Time with FC Krasnodar in Russia

Ragnar moved to Russia on 23 January 2014. He signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with Russian Football Premier League club FC Krasnodar.

Playing for Fulham in England

On 23 August 2016, Ragnar joined Fulham, a team in England's Championship. He signed a two-year contract. Ragnar scored his first goal for Fulham on 26 December 2016. It was in a 2–0 win against Ipswich Town.

Loan to Rubin Kazan

On 3 August 2017, Ragnar returned to Russia. He signed a loan deal with FC Rubin Kazan for the 2017–18 season. A loan deal means he played for them temporarily.

Moving to FC Rostov

On 18 January 2018, Ragnar made a permanent move to FC Rostov. This was his third club in Russia. At Rostov, he joined two of his teammates from the Iceland national team, Sverrir Ingi Ingason and Björn Bergmann Sigurðarson. His contract with Rostov ended on 1 January 2020.

Second Time at Copenhagen

On 12 January 2020, Ragnar went back to Copenhagen. He signed a contract to play for them until the summer of 2020.

Playing for Rukh Lviv in Ukraine

On 18 January 2021, Sigurðsson moved to Ukrainian Premier League side Rukh Lviv. He signed a contract until the summer of 2021.

Ragnar's International Career

Ragnar was a very important player for the Icelandic national team. He was chosen for the 23-man squad for UEFA Euro 2016. This big tournament was led by coaches Heimir Hallgrímsson and Lars Lagerbäck.

He scored his first goal for Iceland on 16 November 2014. This was during a qualifying match for Euro 2016 against the Czech Republic. On 27 June 2016, Ragnar scored Iceland's first goal in a famous 2–1 win against England. This was in the round of 16 at Euro 2016. His excellent performance in that match earned him the "man of the match" award. Ragnar also made an amazing last-minute tackle to stop an equalizer from England's Jamie Vardy.

In May 2018, Ragnar was again named in Iceland's 23-man squad. This time, it was for the 2018 World Cup held in Russia.
