History of Ragonvalia
How Ragonvalia Started
Ragonvalia was founded in 1860. People moved there from nearby towns like Chinácota, El Chopo (now Pamplonita), and Villa del Rosario. They traveled across the mountains to the Táchira River. This river marks the border between Colombia and Venezuela.
People moved because of a civil war that happened between 1860 and 1862. The first settlements were built in a valley. This valley was near two streams called Paso Antiguo and La Hormadera.
Early Settlers and Land
Old records show that Miguel Contreras, Juan Tarazona, and Rafael Quintero were among the first to own land here. Rafael Quintero was important because he encouraged other early settlers to come to the area.
Official Recognition and Name Changes
On September 27, 1881, the president of the Sovereign State of Santander, Solón Wilches, officially created a settlement called "Planadas."
Later, on September 3, 1887, the Governor of Santander, General Alejandro Peña Solano, added the small villages of Mundo Nuevo and "La Honda" to the area. At that time, Chinácota was the main town, and this new territory was part of its legal district.
In 1892, the Assembly of Santander changed the name of the settlement. They renamed it "Concordia." This new name honored the ideas of peace and unity that were important to the first people who lived there.
On April 14, 1930, the Assembly of Norte de Santander ordered another name change. Concordia was renamed "Ragonvalia." This was done to honor "Patricio Ramón González Valencia." He was a former president of Colombia and was from Norte de Santander. During these years, the town grew. Its economy also expanded due to trade with Venezuela.
Climate
Ragonvalia has a mild climate. This is because it is located high up in the mountains. The weather is generally cool and comfortable throughout the year. It also receives a good amount of rain.
