Rahsaan Patterson's Journey in Music
Starting on TV: Kids Incorporated
In 1984, Rahsaan Patterson tried out for the TV show Kids Incorporated. This happened after he performed in a school talent show. He got the part of "The Kid" and stayed on the show for several years. He worked with other young stars like Fergie, Renee Sands, Martika, Mario Lopez, and Shanice.
Beginning His Music Career
After Kids Incorporated, Rahsaan Patterson started singing backup for different artists. One of these artists was his Kids co-star, Martika. He also helped write songs for other musicians. For example, he wrote "Baby" for Brandy and "Back to the World" for Tevin Campbell.
First Album: Rahsaan Patterson (1997)
Rahsaan Patterson signed with MCA Records in 1995. He worked with producers like Keith Crouch and Jamey Jaz. His first album, named Rahsaan Patterson, came out on January 28, 1997. This album reached No. 48 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart.
Two songs from the album were released as singles: "Stop By" and "Where You Are". "Where You Are" reached No. 53 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Even though the album got good reviews, it did not become a huge hit. However, Rahsaan gained many loyal fans in the U.S. and other countries.
New Music: Love in Stereo and SoundTracks (1999-2002)
Rahsaan Patterson then started working on his second album, Love in Stereo. He worked again with Jamey Jaz and new artists like Van Hunt. When Love in Stereo was released in late 1999, it received even better reviews than his first album.
The album reached No. 51 on Billboards Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart. Two singles, "The Moment" and "Treat You Like A Queen", were released. "Treat You Like A Queen" reached No. 61 on Billboards Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Rahsaan toured across the U.S. and Europe to support this album.
After this, Rahsaan and MCA Records decided to go separate ways. But Rahsaan stayed busy. He kept performing live and worked as a session singer. He also contributed to movie soundtracks, like Brown Sugar, and other music collections.
More Albums: After Hours and Wines & Spirits (2004-2008)
Rahsaan Patterson's third album, After Hours, was released in other countries in April 2004. It also received good reviews. Rahsaan then started his own music label, and After Hours was released in the U.S. in October 2004. The album debuted at No. 65 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
His next album, Wines & Spirits, came out on September 24, 2007. He worked with Crouch and Jaz again on this album. Wines & Spirits debuted at No. 42 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. This was his highest-charting album at that time. It also reached No. 45 on the Independent Albums Chart.
The singles "Stop Breaking My Heart" and "Feels Good" were released from this album. Both songs appeared on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. His friend, singer Ledisi, described Rahsaan's talent as being "overly honest in his recordings and in his live performances."
