He also won a big award called the International Woolmark Prize in 2014. He received this prize at Milan Fashion Week. This made him the first Indian designer ever to win it! Rahul Mishra's Early Life and Education

Rahul Mishra grew up in a quiet village called Malhausi. It is about 53 miles from Kanpur. He spent his childhood with his grandparents. They told him many stories about religion, history, and how to be a good person.

He first studied physics at Kanpur University. This university is now known as Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University. After that, he studied apparel design at the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad. He was a very talented student and won the Best Student Designer Of The Year award in 2005.

In 2009, Rahul Mishra received a special scholarship. He was the first designer from outside Europe to get this scholarship. He used it to study at Istituto Marangoni in Milan, Italy. His wife, Divya, also studied apparel design at NID. She now works with him on his fashion projects.

Rahul Mishra's Fashion Career

Rahul Mishra started his fashion journey in 2006. He showed his first collection at Lakme Fashion Week. He used special cotton fabrics from Kerala, India. These fabrics were often off-white with a golden border, like the traditional Kerala mundu. In 2009, he created reversible dresses. One side used Kerala mundu fabric, and the other side used beautiful Banarasi fabric. These fabrics were made by skilled traditional weavers.

Rahul Mishra has shown his designs at many fashion events. These include fashion weeks in London, Dubai, and Australia. He is also a regular designer at the official Paris Fashion Week. He is well-known for using traditional Indian textiles and handmade crafts in his designs. He is the only Indian designer chosen by Rent the Runway, which is an online company where people can rent designer clothes.

Winning the Woolmark Prize

In 2013, Rahul Mishra won the Indian part of the International Woolmark Prize. This meant he would represent India and the Middle East in the main competition. The final competition was held in Milan in 2014. He competed against designers from Australia, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Rahul Mishra's winning collection was called "The Lotus Effect." It was inspired by hexagon shapes and lotus flower designs. He used a special fabric called Chanderi woven with 85% Merino wool. The clothes also had beautiful woollen zardozi embroidery. This embroidery was done by skilled craftspeople in Kolkata. The collection's look was also influenced by the black and white art of a Dutch artist named Maurits Cornelis Escher.

In February 2014, Rahul Mishra officially won the 2014 Woolmark Prize at Milan Fashion Week. This award came with a prize of AUS $100,000. Famous designers like Karl Lagerfield, Giorgio Armani, and Yves Saint Laurent had won this award before him. Rahul Mishra was the only Indian designer to ever win this prestigious prize.
