Rainbow Bridge, Oxford facts for kids
The Rainbow Bridge is a special footbridge in Oxford, England. It crosses the River Cherwell inside the University Parks. People often call it the Rainbow Bridge because it is curved like a rainbow. Its official name is High Bridge. The bridge is made of strong concrete with metal railings.
Building the Rainbow Bridge
This bridge was built a long time ago, between 1923 and 1924. It was part of a project to help people who didn't have jobs. This project gave them work building the bridge.
The University of Oxford helped pay for the bridge. Many colleges at the University also gave money. Lots of other people who wanted to help also contributed to its cost.
What Can You Do at Rainbow Bridge?
In the summer, you can often see punts floating under the bridge. Punts are flat-bottomed boats that people push with a long pole.
From the top of the bridge, you get a great view. You can see the river stretching far in both directions. On the other side of the bridge, away from the Parks, there is a path. This path goes across the meadows to a nearby area called New Marston.
