The Rainbow Falls, also known by its Māori name Waianiwaniwa, are a beautiful waterfall in New Zealand. The name Waianiwaniwa means "Waters of the Rainbow." These falls are located on the Kerikeri River, close to the town of Kerikeri.

What Makes Rainbow Falls Special?

Rainbow Falls are quite unique compared to many other waterfalls in New Zealand. Most waterfalls form when water slowly wears away soft rocks. But Rainbow Falls are different!

They sit on a very hard layer of rock called basalt. Next to this hard rock is softer mudstone. Over a long time, the river's water carved away the softer mudstone. This created the stunning 27-meter-high waterfall we see today.

A Popular Spot

The falls are a very popular place for visitors. Many people come to see and photograph them. You can get a great view from an area managed by the Department of Conservation. It's a perfect spot to take amazing pictures!

Explore the Rainbow Falls Walk

If you love nature and history, you'll enjoy the Rainbow Falls Walk. It's an exciting adventure that takes you through beautiful New Zealand bush.

The Track to History

The main walk to the falls is short, only about 10 minutes. This path connects to a longer trail called the Kerikeri River Track. This longer track is about 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) long. It takes about 1.5 hours to walk one way.

The track follows the north side of the Kerikeri River. It leads you to the Kerikeri Basin. This area is full of important old buildings and historic sites.

  • The Stone Store: This is New Zealand's oldest stone building.
  • Mission House: Also known as Kemp House, it's the country's oldest wooden building.
  • St James Church: A historic church with a lot of character.
  • Rewa's Village: A recreated Māori village where you can learn about traditional life.
  • Kororipo Pa: An ancient Māori fortified village site with amazing views.

Discover Nature on the Path

As you walk, you'll pass through regenerating native forests. This means new trees are growing back. You might see young kauri trees, which are very large and ancient. You'll also spot totara trees, another important native species.

The track also goes through areas that are home to the kiwi bird. The kiwi is a special bird that only lives in New Zealand. It's a shy, nocturnal bird, so you might not see one during the day, but it's cool to know they live there!
